Caring & Cleaning your Sterling Silver

Caring & Cleaning your Sterling Silver jewellery

Tarnishing
Over time, any piece of silver jewellery exposed to the air will tarnish. Pure silver, like gold, is impervious to tarnish or oxidation on the surface. However, it is the alloy metal which attracts the tarnish. The copper, in particular, reacts to moisture and sulphur in the air causing the tarnishing reaction.

Some people will find that their silver pieces, tarnish more rapidly than others. The tarnishing is normally related to their personal skin condition, use of body lotions, deodorants, hairsprays and or perfumes as well as the wear and care of the piece. Areas with high humidity and air pollution will also make Sterling Silver tarnish faster. To help prevent your silver jewellery from tarnishing, adhere to the following care tips:-
  • Store your jewellery in a cool, dark place away from sunlight heat and moisture.
  • Do not wear your silver jewellery in the bathroom, shower, swimming pool & hot tub
  • After taking off your silver jewellery, clean it with a soft, dry cloth / or polishing cloth before storing the piece in an airtight container.
  • Store all pieces separately to protect the Silver from possible scratching.

Cleaning of Jewellery
We recommend the use of Jewellery polishing cloths to clean your silver jewellery.
If the polishing cloth does not remove all the tarnish, wash silver jewellery (without gemstones and /or pearls – see special cleaning instructions for these) in warm water with a few drops of mild dishwashing liquid. Immerse the silver jewellery in the water and gently hand wash. Use a cotton swab for tight corners or a soft baby toothbrush for more abrasive cleaning if still needed. Thoroughly rinse the jewellery and dry completely before storing. We do not recommend using toothpaste or baking soda for cleaning as it may be too abrasive for the silver. Never use harsh chemicals such as bleach, acetone, etc. to clean your silver as they can make the silver more dull, or even worse, ruin the surface. We also do not recommend various home cleaning remedies or commercial silver cleaning liquids or dips as we do not know how abrasive they are. These methods may be used if you so choose, but we will not be held responsible for any damage caused to your silver jewellery
